"Innocence" and "Experience" are definitions of consciousness that rethink Milton's existential-mythic states of "Paradise" and the "Fall." Blake's categories are modes of perception that tend to coordinate with a chronology that would become standard in Romanticism childhood is a state of protected innocence rather than original sin, but not immune to the fallen world and its institutions.

Other Amazon users may be familiar with the Amazon.com practice of posting the Editorial reviews from a SIMILAR product and adding marginal and easy-to-overlook footnotes stating that the posted reviews actually refer to an "alternate paperback edition." I was not aware of the practice before purchasing this book, but aside from that there is no twin footnote floating around the Customer Reviews section below the Editorials to tell you that the reviews provided are from a different book as well, nor can you see what book is ACTUALLY being reviewed unless you leave the book's page and go to See All. Most of the reviews are for this book:

Songs of Innocence and Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul, 1789-1794 (Worlds Classics) [Paperback] William Blake (Author, Illustrator), Sir Geoffrey Keynes (Introduction) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0192810898/ref=dp_proddesc_2?ie=UTF8&n=283155

Why post reviews of a book that the reviews are not for, on its own page? That is not only confusing, but misleading. The book I bought and received is the one with a portrait of Blake on the cover, and its ISBN is 97816119492998--which is not the ISBN posted in Amazon.com's Product Details section, as of June 1, 2012. Amazon lists it as xxxxxxxxxx2997.

There are NO illustrations in this edition. In fact, there isn't any publisher information beyond "Printed in the USA" on the bottom of the first page after the cover. I have not read this book, and am not familiar enough with Blake's work to be able to determine off the cuff if there are any errors or typos. I am assuming that if you only want the poetry of Songs of Innocence and Experience, than it is probably fine--and yes, most likely free of errors/typos. But this book is not an Oxford or any other dependably high-quality published edition. Most importantly, it is not the book that other customers reviewed, it is not a very high-quality or compelling edition in general, and it has no illustration plates. Do not buy this edition if you are a bibliophile looking for a beautiful and collectible book and/or you really want to experience the work of William Blake as it is meant to be experienced--that is, with his illustrations.

Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience William Blake Books Reviews

Mystic, visionary, artist, genius, craftsman, poet, social reformer, humanitarian -- all of these words and more have been used but do not adequately describe William Blake.

"Songs of Innocence and Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul" is widely acknowledged as Blake's masterpiece and, for those who have ears to hear and eyes to see, the insights expressed in it are as moving and valuable now as they were when Blake first expressed them in 1789-94.

Blake was as accomplished a craftsman as he was an artist and a poet. He was perhaps the first artist to express himself in the form of "multimedia". The media, in this case, being "Illuminated books". Blake invented a process where he could etch both poetry (text) and design on copper-plates and also formulated his own colors. What makes this particular edition special is that it contains Blake's original color etchings.

Since I own the basic and wanted to view the colored illustrations, I downloaded this book to my PC, all 952 pages of it! I suggest that you do the same. The poetry is magnificent! The illustrations are amazing! Great gift, especially to accompany a Fire. (No, I do not work for !) You can't go wrong at $2.99!
Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake

I don’t completely understand why some people choose to take the classics, respect them for what they are on the shelf, and then shove them into a box in the back of the closet. I understand that some may feel the classics are a little over analyzed, but the more you read them, the more you comprehend them and the more you understand how very important they are in the grand scheme of the literary world.

Hence why I pulled my weathered copy of the illustrated version of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience from the shelf and attempted to decipher it for the ump-tenth time. Essentially, the book is a two-part collection of William Blake’s poems. The first section of poems contains sweet, childish poems written from the perspectives of either children, or adults speaking to children. Common repetitive elements include those of lambs, cherubs, and other sweet items, such as flowers, birds, or other small creatures. Totally contrary to the first sections, the experience section makes the innocence sections look like Justin Bieber in comparison to Marilyn Manson. Think sex, death, anger, murder, and betrayal. In short, Blake revolutionized the approachable concepts of poetry. His experience section is essentially a summary of the life and styles we find totally acceptable today. However, for it’s time, this was completely disgusting and unexplainable.

Part of the glory of this book comes from the way in which you read it. If you read it with the mindset of someone in the twenty-first century, this is nothing special and Fifty Shades of Gray did the whole screwed up relationships thing much better. However, if you approach this collection of work with the mindset of a nobleman or a noblewoman from the eighteenth or nineteenth century, everything becomes just that much more interesting.

Critique-wise, in my particular copy, the Oxford edition, the publishers printed the illustrations side-by side with the poems printed on the back. However, this makes for inconvenient and confusing reading when the poems are split as the illustrations originally were. Perhaps the publishers should have printed an illustration with a translation directly next to the poem, since the images are essential in the reading and comprehension process.

I highly recommend this book for art lovers, poetry fanatics, or those who love to explore the scandal of centuries gone past.
Beware! If you order this, you're ordering the Filiquarian edition, which is poorly printed, oddly laid out, and contains typos. It has NO illustrations. is mixing in a lot of reviews of other editions---which is either sloppy or dishonest.
